It’s the platform stupid
You know these products and services. The kind that refuse to work. A new payment card, a process, a new consumer packaging or something that at first seems like a genuinely good idea. For some reason they become most unusable when shipped.
In my little country we have had our share of these little bastards.
The first one that springs to mind is our local bus system. Some years ago they decided that implementing their own payment system was a smart thing. It was named Smart Kort (or smart card) so nobody would doubts it’s ingenuity.
In short it was a massive fail. Partially implemented and costing the city taxpayers about half a billion ISK in sunken costs (and this was when our Icelandic kronur could still buy stuff).
Maybe running a large public transport system is enough of a challenge by it self. Maybe implementing a new platform that is neither accessible nor well distributed should some ring alarm bells.
Essentially people will always go where accomplishing their goals is easier …or more fun. Your customer doesn’t really care about anything else. He just want’s to ride the bus.
