The short version

We do not run advertising or third-party analytics on this site. The one place we collect personal information is the form in front of a shared document, and we collect it so we know who we sent that document to and what they read.

Shared documents

Some documents are shared behind a form asking for a name and an email address. When you submit it, we record:

  • — the name and email address you enter
  • — your IP address
  • — your browser's user-agent string, and the page that referred you
  • — which pages of the document you view, in what order, and for how long
  • — whether you download it

We use this to understand who is reading a document and which parts hold their attention. It is visible only to us. We do not sell it, share it with third parties, or use it to advertise to you.

We do not verify the name or email you provide, and the form is the only thing asking. If you would rather not be identified, do not fill it in.

How long we keep it

Document viewing records — including IP addresses — are deleted automatically 90 days after the session. Names and email addresses gathered this way are kept until you ask us to remove them.

Database backups are retained for 30 days, so a deleted record can persist in a backup for up to that long after it disappears from the live system.

Where it is held

Document viewing records are stored on infrastructure we operate ourselves, in the United States, with encrypted off-site backups held in Amazon Web Services. The site itself is served by Amazon CloudFront.

Cookies

This site sets no advertising or analytics cookies. A single session cookie is set when an administrator signs in to review document activity; it is not set for ordinary visitors.

Asking us to delete something

Email [email protected] and tell us what to remove. If you are asking about a document you viewed, the email address you entered is enough to find it.
